The space

Our Yoga Studio in Putney, SW15 — You won’t expect it. That’s the point.

Upper Richmond Road: fumes, noise, everyone with somewhere to be. Step through the door. None of that follows you in. The light changes first — natural, high, particular to this room. Then the sound: the street disappears the moment you cross the threshold. Wood floors. Bolsters stacked in the corners. A quiet that feels earned. We’ve had people stop in the doorway on their first visit. We’ve done it ourselves.

Phoenix Yoga community class
A studio built by its community

Every detail of this space was chosen by the people who use it.

The mats, the bolsters, the lighting, the playlist, the particular shade of paint on the walls — all debated, tried, and improved by the people who practise here. This is what it looks like when a studio belongs to its members.

We’re not precious about it. Feedback is always welcome. Things change. That’s the point — read how we got here →

Phoenix Yoga studio interior
Two rooms

Heart and Soul.

Both rooms have floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall windows. Neither has a logo, a slogan, or the words “Phoenix Yoga” anywhere inside. We noticed this recently. We thought about it — and decided it was exactly right.

Heart

Upstairs. Full-height windows frame the gardens — a view that changes with every season. Summer brings something close to a canopy. Winter, bare branches and low northern light. Skylights pull more in from above. The kind of room that does something to your nervous system before the class has started.

Soul

Downstairs. Rebuilt in 2025 — smaller, more considered. Ten people, maximum. It runs yoga and Mat Pilates classes, and it’s the room where the conversations that keep this place going tend to happen.

The names were chosen by the community. We put out a call, gathered nominations, and held a vote. Heart and Soul won. Other contenders included Sky & Earth, Rise & Shine, Downward & Upward — and, in a contribution we have enormous respect for, Tottenham and Hotspur.
