Growing Our Community

Growing Our Community

Something quietly remarkable has been happening at Phoenix.

Over the past year, more people have walked through our door than at any point in our history. Not because we ran a big campaign or slashed our prices. Just because the community kept showing up — and bringing people with them.

Fifteen per cent more of you, year on year. We’ll take that.

But the number that matters more isn’t the 15%. It’s the conversations we’ve been overhearing — between regulars on the mat before class, between people who met here and now walk in together, between a teacher and a student who’s been coming for eight months and just booked their first workshop. That’s the growth we’re most proud of.

A second space — and what it means

When we first took over this studio, the idea of a second room felt like a pipe dream. We were just trying to keep the lights on and the community together.

This year, we finished building it. Our second studio is now up and running — and it’s already in regular use, hired by practitioners, small group sessions, and independent teachers who needed a beautiful, calm space to work from.

We built it because the main studio was full. We’re delighted it’s being used, and we’re even more delighted by who’s using it — people who care about what they do and felt at home here straight away.

“If you’re looking for a space to teach, run a workshop, or hold a small group session, we’d love to hear from you.”

New faces, familiar feeling

This year also brought us new members who were navigating a change — their previous studio closed, and they needed somewhere to land. A few of our teachers know that feeling well. We all do.

We’re glad they found us. They’ve slotted into the Phoenix community as though they were always here. And in some ways, they were — they just hadn’t made it to Upper Richmond Road yet.

If you’re new to Phoenix, welcome. This studio exists because a community refused to let it disappear. That’s not a marketing line — it’s the reason these walls are still standing. You’re part of that now.

What stays the same

Growth can change a place. We’re aware of that, and we think about it.

Phoenix will always be independent. Always community-owned. Always the kind of studio where your teacher knows your name, and where 25% of what you spend goes back into this place and into Putney. That’s built into how we’re structured, not just how we talk.

Proud to be Putney — and grateful to everyone who makes this what it is.
