Vinyasa is a style of yoga where every posture flows from one to the next, linked by breath. The word itself comes from Sanskrit: vi meaning “in a special way”, and nyasa meaning “to place”. Each movement is placed with intention.
In practice, this means your inhale lifts you, your exhale grounds you, and the transitions between postures become part of the practice rather than interruptions to it. The result is something that feels more like a moving meditation than an exercise class — even while it’s building genuine strength.
At Phoenix, our Vinyasa classes range from accessible flows suitable for relative beginners through to more dynamic practices for those with experience. Your teacher will always offer alternatives, so you can work at your own level within any class.
If you’ve been curious about yoga but worried it might be too still, too slow, or not enough of a challenge — Vinyasa is a good place to start.
More than a workout.
Vinyasa works the body and calms the mind at the same time. Here’s what regular practice tends to bring.
Functional strength
Vinyasa builds whole-body strength through repeated transitions — particularly in the core, arms, shoulders and legs. The kind that shows up in everyday life.
Flexibility & ease
Regular practice gradually releases tension held in muscles and connective tissue. Most people notice improved range of motion within weeks.
Mental clarity
Focusing on breath and movement together has a genuinely meditative effect. Many people find Vinyasa is the most effective way they’ve found to switch off.

Hatha tends to hold poses for longer, with a focus on alignment and stillness. Vinyasa links movements together with breath, creating a warmer, more dynamic practice. Both are valuable — many people do both.
