What actually happens at your first class.

A lot of people put off trying yoga because they think they’re not ready. They’re not flexible enough, not fit enough, not young enough. None of that is true. Here’s what actually happens.

🕐

Before class

Arrive 5–10 minutes early for your first class. Tell the teacher it’s your first time — they’ll make sure you know where to put your mat and what to expect. Mats are provided, no need to bring one.

🧘

During class

Your teacher will guide you through each posture with clear, simple instructions. There are always easier options — and you can rest in Child’s Pose at any point, no questions asked. Nobody is watching you.

After class

Most beginners leave their first class surprised by how good they feel. A little muscle soreness over the next day or two is normal and a sign your body is responding. That’s it — you’ve done yoga.

The things worth saying clearly

You can rest in Child’s Pose at any point.
No questions asked.

Nobody is watching you.
Everyone is focused on themselves.

You don’t need to be flexible.
Flexibility is what you get. Not what you arrive with.

Every teacher at Phoenix knows it’s someone’s first class. They’ve been doing this long enough to make that feel normal — because it is.

Keep it simple.

You don’t need any special equipment to start yoga. Here’s all you need to know.

Comfortable clothes

Leggings or joggers, a fitted top. Anything you can move in. We practise barefoot — no need for shoes on the mat.

Water

Bring a bottle. Yoga is gentle but you may still get warm, especially in a flowing class.

An open mind

The only thing that matters in your first class is that you show up. Everything else follows from there.

Nothing else — mats provided free

We provide mats at no charge. You’re welcome to bring your own if you already have one.

Most of our regulars started with this.

The easiest way to try yoga as a beginner is our 21-day unlimited intro pass — just £50. It lets you try unlimited classes for three weeks — different styles, different teachers, different times — until you find what works for you. No commitment beyond those 21 days.
